"Mismatch" is my young adult science fiction novel written for middle school to high school audiences. The story is set in 2020 and follows five teenagers—Conor, Sara, Angela, Malcolm, and Isaac—who develop abilities as manifestations of their deepest fears and insecurities. As their lives intertwine, they band together to stop Hyde Corp, a sinister corporation responsible for driving the world into dystopia by 2099. Conor, originally from this dark future, travels back in time to help the group prevent the looming catastrophe.
The inspiration for Mismatch sparked during my first trip to the U.S. when I participated in the World Scholar's Cup in November 2018, hosted at Yale University. I was captivated by the Beinecke Library, where conversations with students ignited my interest in writing. My passion deepened after a trip to Columbia University, where I accidentally stumbled upon a kind librarian who recommended “The Girl Who Could Fly” by Victoria Forester at Avery Library. This book changed my life. On the flight back home to Jakarta, I started writing “Mismatch”, a novel that has acted as my life’s anchor, my knowledge bank that married my interests in technology and storytelling.
After years of refining the story and overcoming my initial hesitation to publish, I decided to collaborate with Gramedia to bring Mismatch to life. The book launched in September, accompanied by a book recital for over 100 national school students, where I hoped to inspire a love for writing and English, much like the inspiration I once found in that quiet library.
